A Martini is said to have originated in the 1860s. Over the years, several recipes have evolved. The usual base is a mixture of vermouth and gin. It has long been known as the drink for sophisticated people. A classic recipe has vermouth and gin mixed with ice and garnished with a lemon peel or olive.

A vodka martini is a famous variation, which was made popular by Ian Fleming’s James Bond character. Vodka is used in place of gin on this drink. There are several recipes for champagne martinis. The basic contains two parts of champagne to one of Cointreau orange liquor. In this recipe, a shaker is used to combine ingredients, add chilled glass, and garnish with raspberries. Another option is the use of a mix of champagne, vodka, dry vermouth and maraschino liquor.

Many people believe that the Martinez martini is the original version of the martini cocktail enjoyed by many people these days. This drink has sweet vermouth, gin, maraschino cherries and angostura bitters with equal parts of vermouth and gin. It is used to mix opposing the bitter and sweet flavors and the traditional garnish of a lemon.  There are plenty of Martini variations to choose from depending on your taste and what most people in a get-together prefer.
